Step 1: Obtain a DOT Medical Certificate
Before starting CDL training at ShalePro CDL, you must obtain a DOT (Department of Transportation) medical certificate.
What is a DOT Medical Certificate?
A DOT medical certificate is issued by a certified medical examiner and confirms that you meet the health standards required for commercial driving. This ensures you are physically fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).
DOT medical certificates can be obtained at most health clinics.
Step 2: Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)
Start Your CDL Journey with Confidence
The next step is acquiring your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), required for Class A or Class B CDL training. This involves passing four multiple-choice exams, which can be challenging without guidance.

Step 3: Behind-the-Wheel Training – 3 Phases to Mastery
Our behind-the-wheel training is designed to equip you with practical skills for commercial driving. Training is divided into three phases to build competence and confidence.
Phase 1: Vehicle Inspections
Learn to perform thorough inspections, including pre-trip, en route, and post-trip checks. This phase ensures you can assess vehicle safety and functionality inside and out, forming a foundation for safe driving.
Phase 2: Parking and Reversing Maneuvers
Develop precision in essential parking and reversing skills through four maneuvers:
- Forward Stop: Accurately stop at designated points.
- Straight Line Backing: Reverse in a straight path with control.
- Forward Offset Backing: Position your vehicle into an offset space.
- Reverse Offset Backing: Reverse into an angled space from another lane.
By completing this phase, you will confidently handle complex parking and reversing scenarios.
Phase 3: Driving – Basic Vehicle Control Skills
Apply your skills in real-world driving situations, including city and highway conditions. Learn vehicle control, space management, shifting, wide turns, and defensive driving techniques to prepare for the CDL test and your career.
